The time has come for a change of leadership for the Halifax Regional Municipality. The Municipal election will be happening on October 19th 2024, with advance in-person voting on October 12th and 15th and advanced online and phone voting starting October 8th until October 16th.

The current Mayor, Mike Savage, is stepping down from his position, which means HRM will have a new mayor for the first time in 12 years! There are 18 Official Candidates for mayor, and you can read about their platforms and ideas for leading Halifax here.

Several councillors will also not be returning for this election, including District 7 Councillor Waye Mason, District 8 Councillor Lindell Smith, District 13 Councillor Pam Lovelace, District 14 Councillor Lisa Blackburn, and District 16 Councillor Tim Outhit. That means these seats will definitely have a fresh face on the Council. To see who is running in your district, click here!

Municipal Councillors have a lot of responsibility in our communities. They are the decision-makers for planning and approvals, infrastructure projects, the municipal budget, and all the municipal services. We encourage all residents of Halifax to do their research on each candidate in your district and make an informed decision.

We wish all of the municipal candidates good luck and look forward to working with the new council in November!

Voting is an important part of democracy, and ensuring that our communities are shaped by the best representatives. At Sightline Planning + Approvals, we recognize the importance of participating in the democratic process, and we urge any citizens in Halifax to get out and vote.
